Frank Wilson ‘Bud’ Phillips, Jr., age 79, of Three Mile Highway, the Ingalls community where he was a lifelong resident, died Saturday, March 1, 2014 at his home. He was born on May 23, 1934 in Avery County and was the oldest son of the late Frank W. Phillips, Sr. and the late Henrietta Thompson Phillips. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Patsanna Phillips Cope and a brother, Anthony W. ‘Tony’ Phillips. He attended Lees-McRae College and North Carolina State University, studying electrical engineering. With his brother Tony, Bud farmed, mined mica, and worked in the timber business. Bud owned and operated Mitchell Lumber Co. until his death. A self-reliant mountain man, Bud pursued his interests exploring the mountains, identifying trees, plants and flowers and searching for Indian artifacts. His unique passion for the history of the land in Western North Carolina made him a lifelong learner and teacher to his family, friends and geologists from around the world. Bud is survived by his daughter; Cynthia Phillips of Ingalls; his sons; Jim Phillips and wife, Susan of Burnsville; and Alan Phillips and wife, Anne of Burnsville; eight grand children; Jessie, Matthew, Valerie, Gracie, Tony, Mikaela, Sophia, and Aleyna; sisters; Rita Phillips Todd and husband, Lionel of Whiteville, NC, Jane Phillips Powell and husband, Charlie of Asheville, NC, and Susie Phillips Loven and husband, Jimmy of Afton, TN; and Vivien Clark Phillips, the mother of his children. The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence at the funeral service honoring the life of Bud Phillips on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with the Rev. Toni Ruth Smith officiating. A time to receive friends and share memories and support the family will begin at 4:00 pm on Monday, March 3, 2014 at Webb Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Phillips Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to; Yellow Mountain Enterprise.org, P.O.
