Charles Robert Hollifield, age 77, of Dale Road in Spruce Pine, died on Sunday, September 13, 2015 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House in Winston-Salem.Born on April 10, 1938, he was the son of the late Willard and Kitty McKinney Hollifield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers; Alvin, Thomas, Everett, Jack, Armond, and Willard Hollifield, Jr. and his sisters; Marlene Brown and Glenda Hollifield. Charles was retired from American Thread /Coates American in Marion after thirty-seven years of service. He was fortunate to retire at age sixty-two. After retirement, he filled his days serving others; volunteering with Meals on Wheels and playing bluegrass music at the Brian Center and other events. He always had a servant’s heart, aiding his neighbors any way he could. He was a member of the Grassy Creek Baptist Church and had served as a Sunday School Teacher.Charles was the lead picker in his bluegrass band and he played in festivals and many family gatherings. He never took a formal music lesson but was naturally gifted musically. He could pick up virtually any instrument and play it by ear. Charles was a welder by profession but he used his skill to bring joy to those around him by creating beautiful works of art as well as fixing anything that could be broken, like the handle of a pot. He also created unique stainless steel wedding bands for couples.Charles was a man put on earth to fix broken things, whether it was a handle or broken heart. And if he didn’t have the tools on hand to fix it, he would either find it or invent it. One of his inventions was, ‘The Leet Power Step Lift’. This invention was created by Charles for an acquaintance that couldn’t get in to or out of her automobile. Again, his servant’s heart was put to use for the benefit of someone other than himself.Charles had a huge sense of humor and had a ‘yarn’ to tell that would keep the whole room laughing. His big smile and bright blue eyes would bring sunshine into anyone’s gloomy day and he never met a stranger. In spite of becoming sick with Alzheimer’s, he still loved people and would do anything to make you smile.Left to cherish his memories are his wife of fifty-five years; Evelyn Clark Hollifield of Spruce Pine; his daughters; Pam Davis and fiancée, Fernando Ariza of Long Beach, CA and Tracy Black and fiancée, Randy Simmons of Clemmons; his son; Patrick Hollifield and wife, Lynn of Spruce Pine; his grandchildren; Holli Davis, Cameron Davis, Rachel Black, and Hannah Black; his sisters; Laura Jane Byrd and husband, Charles and Virginia Buchanan and husband, W.R. all of Spruce Pine. The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence for the funeral service honoring the life of Charles Hollifield on Wednesday, September, 16, 2015 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with the Rev’s.
