‘Monk’ Fred Allen Johnson, age 73, of Dale Road in Spruce Pine, passed away peacefully in his sleep, on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at his home.Born on February 22, 1945 in McDowell County, he was the son of the late James M. and Donnie Williams Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister; Edith Johnson Carter; his brothers; Cecil Johnson, Bill Laws, and ‘Jeeter’ Jack Laws.Monk was retired from American Thread where he had been a truck driver for many years. He was a member of Joppa Lodge #401 AF & AM Masonic Lodge in Old Fort. He attended Pleasant Gardens High School, where he was a naturally talented, superstar athlete. He continued his love of sports by playing basketball and softball in recreational and industrial leagues. He also enjoyed fishing, playing golf and visiting family and friends. He never met a stranger and was a friendly, gentle giant.Left to cherish his memories are his wife of forty-one years; Barbara Riddle Johnson of the home; his son; Tim McKinney and wife, Julie; grandson Aaron McKinney all of Marion; his brothers; Carl Johnson and wife, Pat; Tommy Johnson; and James Lloyd Johnson all of Marion; his nephews; Chris Laws of Chicago, IL, John Laws and Mack Laws of Marion, Kenny Riddle of Spruce Pine, Mike Riddle of Nebo and Keith Riddle of Marion and his niece; Kathy Laws of Marion; also a special group of fishing buddies.The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence at the funeral service honoring the life of Monk Johnson on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 5:30 pm in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home. A time to support the family, share memories and receive friends will be on Saturday, May 19, 2018 from 3:30 pm until 5:30 pm in the funeral home chapel.
