Kermit Johnson

Kermit Arlin Johnson, age 89, of Washburn Road in Spruce Pine died Friday, January 15, 2016 at Brian Center Health and Rehab in Spruce Pine. Kermit was a kind and generous man who loved his family.Born on August 27, 1926 in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Hobart and Marla Bowman Johnson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters; Margaret Carter, Frances van den Enden, and Helen McCoury; he was also preceded in death by a grandson, Logan Pitman.Kermit was a member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church and sang in the church choir. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy and a veteran of the Korean War serving the U.S. Air Force. He was a graduate of Appalachian State University and was retired from Mitchell County Schools where he served as principal of Tipton Hill Elementary School, Harris High School and Bowman High School.Left to cherish his memories are wife; Betty Buchanan Johnson of Spruce Pine; his daughter; Deborah Sawicki and husband, Jim of Charlotte; his stepdaughters; Tinky Piercy and husband, Sam of Bakersville; Stacey Glenn and husband, John of Spruce Pine; Jill Voland and husband, Tim of Bakersville; his brother; David Johnson and wife, Suzanne of Germantown; there are five grandchildren and three great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence at the funeral service honoring the life of Kermit Johnson at 12:00 noon on Monday, January, 18, 2016 at the Bear Creek Baptist Church with the Rev’s. Chris Rathbone and Lawrence Glenn officiating. Interment will follow in the Bear Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
