Avery Dexter Carpenter, age 93, of Hill Street in Spruce Pine, died Friday, August 7, 2020 at his home.Born on April 16, 1927 in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Avery D. Carpenter and the late Nettie Huskins Carpenter Duncan and his step father; Frank Duncan who also preceded him in death. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Hoyt Carpenter; his half-brother; Jack Duncan; his step brothers; Stanley and Dale Duncan; and his step sisters; Velma Duncan, Bea Queen, Louise Mace, and Myrtle Abernathy.Avery was a member of the Berry Chapel Baptist Church where he served as Chairman of the Deacons for forty years. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service following thirty years of service and was also a Veteran of the U.S. Army. He was known as a mild mannered and genuinely kind man. He sincerely loved the Lord, his church, and family. In his spare time he enjoyed working outside, gardening, and woodworking.Left to cherish his memories are his wife of seventy-three years; Betty Queen Carpenter; his son; Steve Carpenter and wife, Susie of Spruce Pine; his daughter; Judy Greer of Spruce Pine; his granddaughters; Vanessa Hawes and husband, Dave; Elizabeth Patterson; Jennifer Gilley and husband, Matthew; and Julie Greer; his great grandsons; Owen and Avery Gilley; his half-sister; Peggy Hodge and husband, Jerry; several nieces and nephews.A time to support the family, share memories, and receive friends will be on Sunday, August 9, 2020 from 6:30 pm until 7:30 pm at Berry Chapel Baptist Church. The funeral service will be on Sunday, August 9, 2020 at 7:30 pm at Berry Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev’s. Steve Williams and Greg Hollifield officiating.
