Barbara Buchanan

June 7, 1938 - November 20, 2021

Barbara Jean Gouge Buchanan, age 83, of Fairway Lane in Spruce Pine, passed away Saturday, November 20, 2021 at her home. Barbara Jean, Barb, Mama, or “Grannie” are just a few of the names she was called and loved to be called. Barbara was a 1956 graduate of Harris High School and went on to obtain an Associate Degree in business at the Cranberry College of Business. She was married in 1957 to the late, Tommy Buchanan for nineteen years and raised two amazing daughters. In addition to her husband; she was preceded in death by her parents; James J. Gouge, Sr. and Georgia Nichols Gouge; a granddaughter; Adrienne Dayton and her brother; Jim Gouge, Jr. Barbara spent her life working with numbers as an accountant while also working in real estate and property management. She worked with many different companies and led them to success while living in Spruce Pine, Windy Hill, SC and Charlotte, NC. Prior to moving to Spruce Pine, she was a Girl Scout troop leader and a leader of the GA’s (Girls in Action). She was presently an active member of Grassy Creek Baptist Church where she was a faithful Servant of the Lord and was part of the Social Community at church. She loved the fellowship with the ladies of her Sunday school class as well. She was active in many civic organizations and served on many boards including being instrumental in establishing the Spruce Pine Public Library along with members of the Junior Women’s Club of Spruce Pine. After retiring at age 81 as the finance officer for the non-profit organization, Communities in Schools, now known as Rural Education Partners of Mitchell County, and working with the children of Mitchell County Schools, she has spent time with family until her very last breath. Barbara was fiercely independent but had the personality and love for people that was contagious and that everyone loved being around. Her family was everything to her with her daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren being her pride and joy. A few of her hobbies included writing, painting, crafting, keeping plants alive, playing cards, and telling and sharing stories. She will be missed by family and friends but we will always have a Barbara Jean, Mama, or “Grannie” story to tell with many memories. Left to cherish her memory is her daughters; Tressa Dayton and husband, Danny of Spruce Pine and Cherri Franklin and husband, Randy of Charlotte; her grandchildren; Michelle Sparks and husband, Craig; Brandi Clark and husband, Michael; Danielle Dayton; and Randall Franklin and wife, Trina; her great grandchildren; Charlee and Evee Sparks; Miles and Noah Clark; and Adrianna Franklin; her brother; Rev. Steve Gouge and wife, Wanda of Taylorsville, KY; several nieces and nephews. A service to celebrate and honor the life of Barbara Buchanan will be on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at 3:00 pm at the Grassy Creek Baptist Church with the Rev’s Steve Gouge and Nathan Silver officiating. Interment will be in the Phillips Cemetery. The family would like to offer a tremendous ‘Thank You’ to Hospice & Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge, specifically, Ciji, Jessica, Cindy, Jennifer, Rachel and Tandi.
