Mrs. Edna Ann (McKinney) Herman was born on January 16, 1929 in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, to her late parents Grady McKinney and Ema Young McKinney. Edna passed away at the age 89 on July 18, 2018 at her home in Bessemer City, North Carolina. Edna was married to the late E. Earl Herman. She was preceded in death by her brother, Collins McKinney; and sisters, Betty McKinney Boston and Sue McKinney Howell. Edna is survived by her son, Grady Herman and daughter-in-law Phyllis Wright-Herman; daughter, Melody Herman Rector and son-in-law Dr. Timothy Rector; grandchildren, Chloe Herman, Collins Herman, Grady Rector, and Ava Rector. In addition to Monica Boston Perry, Edna leaves behind a wealth of loved nieces and nephews.Edna graduated from Harris High School in Mitchell County and Catawba School of Nursing earning a Licensed Practical Nursing Degree. In addition to private duty nursing, Edna was employed at Garrison General Hospital and Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation.Edna's only interest, so far as we could tell, involved taking care of others. She specialized in reminding you to: be careful in all things, maintain a proper diet, get adequate rest, shower, brush your teeth, never speak ill of others, go to church, and arrive early to everything. This list is abbreviated and varied in order and intensity of admonishment. Her subspecialty was medical advice. Her sister once remarked, "Lord Edna, if we could quote the Bible like you quote Dr. Oz, we would be Biblical scholars." Mostly, the family is pleased to report, she succeeded (excepting the punctuality), if only because she was so darn persistent. Edna was renowned for feeding and clothing family, friends, friends' friends, strangers, and friends of strangers. She typically provided nutritious meals (so as not to have to remind us again to eat healthy) but developed an interest in Pecan Pies during her later years. Sadly, while her secret Pecan Pie Recipe did pass with her, the memory of not only its delectable taste but also the spirit and love in which it was given will linger always. It seemed as if Jesus spoke directly to her regarding his guidance to be a servant. Our hope is everyone would be as lucky to be ministered by such a servant. The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence at the funeral service honoring the life of Edna Herman at 3:00 pm on Sunday, July 22, 2018 in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with Tim Rector officiating.
