Finley Richard Johnson Sr.

Finley Richard Johnson, Sr., age 84, of Squirrel Creek Road in Newland, died Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Brian Center Health & Rehab in Spruce Pine.Born on June 14, 1934 in Avery County, he was the son of the late Theodore Roosevelt Johnson and Iva Young Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Hoilman Johnson and a daughter, Remona Gwyn Johnson.Finley was a member of the Johnson Chapel Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Finley was an avid outdoorsman that enjoyed all kinds of hunting and was particularly fond of bear hunting. He also enjoyed fly fishing and gardening.Left to cherish his memories are his children; ReJeanna Trice, Finley Johnson, Jr., and Kristie Johnson all of Newland; his sister; Ruby Louise Shoupe of Newland; there are eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence at the graveside service and interment to honor the life of Finley Johnson, Sr. on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at 11:00 am in the Ashley Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Shoupe officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Sgt. E.L. Briggs Sgt. E L Randolph, Chapter 57, D.A.V.The family would like to extend a ‘Special Thank You’ to the staff of Mission Hospital and Brian Center Health & Rehab for their wonderful care of Finley during his illness.
