Lawrence Smith, age 87, of Harris Street in Spruce Pine, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine. Born on August 15, 1925 in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Luther and Dollie Tolley Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers; Barney, Daniel, Lee, and Howard Smith and his sisters; Anna Ackiss and Viola McFalls. Lawrence Smith was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Spruce Pine Christian Church and was a retired truck driver. He was an aviator and supporter of the Avery County Airport. Mr. Lawrence Smith is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years; Rosa Lee Abernathy Smith of Spruce Pine; his sons; Larry D. Smith of Spruce Pine and Gary Smith and wife, Nina of Spruce Pine; his grandson; Michael John Smith and wife, Jessica of Bakersville and a great granddaughter; Taylor Ann Smith of Bakersville; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Lawrence Smith will be conducted on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with Phil Moody, Bud Atkins, Stanley Hopson, and Steve Williams officiating. Interment will follow in the Tolley Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel.
