Mabelann Mathis, age 80, of Little Switzerland, NC went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Tuesday, September 6, 2022. She is now set free from the bondage of cancer and is united with her husband Jesse.Mabelann was born on August 27, 1942 to Raymond and Harriett Reeb of Ontario, Canada. She graduated from Essex High School in 1961 and met Jesse while he was stationed in Bermuda with the Navy. She married Jesse in 1966 and moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where she worked for Presbyterian Hospital. She became a US citizen in 1967 and moved to Spruce Pine, North Carolina in 1972. After moving to Spruce Pine, she worked for Blue RIdge Community Hospital and later for Mitchell County as an administrative assistant for the Veterans Affairs Service and the Building Inspector.Preceded in the death of Mabelann was her husband Jesse, who died in February 2021. She is survived by her son, Aaron Mathis and wife, Bonnie; her daughter; Amy Thomas and husband, Stacy; her sister, Darlene Maedel of Ontario Canada, and brother Melvin Reeb also of Ontario, Canada.; her grandchildren; Ashely Thomas and Ralph, Brianna Thomas Willis and husband, Jake; Christen Kerlin and husband, Taylor; Taylor Griffin and husband, Sam; and Tanner Mathis; and her pride and joy; Iyla Jade, who was her only great-grandchild.Mabelann was a member of Freedom Baptist Church and loved singing in the choir. She was also an avid sports enthusiast and loved all sports, especially hockey. While Growing up in Canada, Mabelann spent many winter months skating on frozen ponds and watching hockey games with her cousins. Her favorite hockey team was the Detroit Red Wings and her favorite baseball team was the Detroit Tigers.The memorial/burial service for Mabelann will be on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Freedom Baptist Church in Spruce Pine. The Reverends Cass Buchanan and Bruce Cannon will be officiating.The Mathis family would like to thank Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge for all of their support, love, and help to the family during Mabelann’s battle with cancer. They would especially like to thank Alisha and Ciji for loving and caring for their mom.
